New Orders Paused Until March 1st

I am putting a 4-month pause on new orders starting October 20th and ending March 1st. Products drop shipped (DeatschWerks products and AL MAF housings), catch cans, and AWD fuel pump assemblies will still be available to order during the pause. VAST Tuning is a one-man shop – I manufacture […]

Fueling In M4.3 and M4.4

M4.x turbo Volvos use a return-type fuel system with a rising rate FPR that maintains constant injector pressure differential by referencing manifold pressure. The pump runs at 100% duty, making oversized pumps problematic. Factory injectors, FPRs, and fuel trims are covered, with practical recommendations for turbo upgrades, E85, and NA-to-turbo conversions.

VAST Tuning Suite

We’re proud to announce the release of a standalone, simple to use program for datalogging, flashing and code reading for Motronic 4.4. This program runs on both Windows and MacOS. There is no longer any need for complicated computer setup using the program TunerPro. Downloads: Windows Mac with Intel silicon […]

Coil on Plug

What is coil on plug? Coil on plug (COP) gives you a separate ignition coil for each cylinder. Instead of a single ignition coil, ignition distributor and spark plug wires, there is an individual ignition coil for each cylinder. What are the advantages of COP? Stronger Spark With the single […]

Volvo’s Variable Valve Timing

What VVT actually does When Volvo switched to the ME7 engine management system in 1999, they added variable valve timing. At first, only the exhaust cam had it, but after 2005, both intake and exhaust cams employed VVT. The exhaust-only implementation of VVT was primarily for emissions compliance, as it […]

Customer Dyno Sheets and Videos

1998 S70R with the factory installed 18t The first dyno (301/227) was with the stock tune, 3″ downpipe and gasoline. The second dyno (485/240) was with a VAST tune and E85 1998 V70R with GTX3071R This dyno sheet is from a full build completed in house. The car is a […]

Boost Control, Wastegate Preload and TCV Selection

Motronic 4.4, along with most engine management systems, uses a combination of mechanical and electronic systems to control boost pressure. This article explains: 1. The Three Pieces that Control Boost Boost control is dependent on these three components: You can think of boost control as a combination: 2. Wastegate Actuator: […]

Exhaust Manifold and Turbine Housing Types

The Volvo 5 cylinder whiteblock turbo motor came with three types of exhaust manifolds. The 850/early P80 manifold, #1270242009, was fitted to 1992-2000 engines. The ‘Japanifold’, part #9207688, was fitted to 2001-2004 engines. The ‘R’ manifold, part #30637921, was fitted to all engines 2004+, not only the S60R/V70R, as is […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 13

One thing I wanted to make sure I got right before dropping in the motor was that I had the correct wastegate springs fitted and properly preloaded. I plan to run these turbos up to 32psi and if I assume that the ΔP will be 2:1, then exhaust manifold pressure […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 7

I would really to be able to drift this car, so in preparation for that I installed new shims in the center diff. I got some new rotors for the front brakes as well. I could find only rotor with the correct outer dimensions that used the same rotor hat […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 6

I experienced some rattle right after cold startup if I let the car sit for a few days, so I figured the oil check valves had gone bad, or the oil distribution tube o-rings were shot. It’s not like I’d do this level of work and not replace them, but […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 5

Finally got back to work on the car. Delays at the machine shop plus a vacation meant I couldn’t work on the car for a few months. I was hoping to re-use the stock pistons, but the bores were worn way past spec, so I got a new set of […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 4

I got a used pair of OE BW K04’s from a forum member. Despite them being low mileage, I decided to rebuild them and upgrade the compressor wheels before putting them on the car. For the wheels, I got Mamba part 010-K3A6. It’s an 11 blade wheel with extended tips, […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 3

Got the engine fully torn down. I’ve rebuilt quite a few motors and I have to say, I think this is probably one of the most complex ones I’ve yet worked on. The amount of parts that came off the motor and trans covered four 3′ x 6′ tables almost […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 2

I’ve had a NIB DW300 fuel pump kicking around for the past year, so I decided to put it to good use. I turned an adapter sleeve out of aluminum to fit the pump snugly in the factory sender housing. I then soldered the DW connector the sender lid. For […]

The Fast Daily – A C5 Allroad Story – Part 1

This build was originally posted on Audizine starting November 2022, but after Google drive changed their directory structure and broke the pictures, twice, I decided to host the content myself. I’ve wanted a B5 S4 since I was a sophomore in high school. It was the first ‘realistic’ fantasy car […]

What is Wideband Lambda Control?

We now offer a plug-and-play wideband controller: https://vasttuning.com/product/plug-and-play-wideband-controller The Quick Answer Wideband lambda control lets your ECU measure the actual air-fuel ratio across a wide range—not just “lean or rich of stoich.” This enables closed-loop fuel corrections even under boost, making your tune safer and fueling more responsive. What Does […]

Upgrading Your MAF Housing

The Quick Answer Upgrading your mass airflow sensor’s (MAF) housing isn’t about reducing intake restriction—it allows the ECU to measure more airflow, enabling accurate tuning at higher power levels. How the MAF Sensor Works The MAF sensor uses a heated resistor to measure the mass of air flowing into your […]

Fuel Pump Wiring Upgrade

The factory fuel pump wiring on P80 Volvos is insufficient at providing enough power for upgraded fuel pumps. As counter intuitive as it may seem, sometimes upgrading a fuel pump without upgrading the wiring can actually decrease fuel flow. This is because larger pumps require more power to flow the […]

Thinking of Tuning Yourself?

The purchase of a ‘Tune It Yourself’ ECU comes with support only for hardware. At the time of purchase a minimally modified base tune will be emailed to you, as well as flashed to the ECU prior to shipment. This base tune is a factory 607 or 608 ‘rev5’ tune, […]
